Carnatic Vocal
Much of who I am as a musician is rooted in the Carnatic vocal tradition, which I learned from the late Smt. Jayashree Vardarajan. I am indebted to the lessons she taught me, through the discipline and intention she lived by.
In memory of Smt. Jayashree Varadarajan
Having recently lost my music teacher, Smt. Jayashree Varadarajan, I'd like to make a note, passing forward something she taught me. As consumers of art, we must understand that an artist's teacher is anyone or anything — formal or not — who taught this artist: a lesson about art or life, how to press a finger to a key, how to tighten the bow of a violin exactly such that there is a tautness to the strings but not so tight that they may risk snapping, how to breathe so as to channel air into 32 feet of circular metal tubing. Teachers are everywhere around us, and there is no such thing as "self-taught." And there is no such thing as music without collaboration.
